Now, what to actually buy. The boot wall isn't a ranking — it's a set of trades. Each brand earns its slot for a reason, and the right pair depends on what you do for forty hours a week.
Timberland Pro Boondock and Pit Boss are the workhorses. The Boondock 6-inch and 8-inch waterproof are what we sell to framers, masons, and demo crews. ASTM F2413 rated, composite or steel toe, anti-fatigue midsole. The Pit Boss is the cheaper steel-toe answer for a guy who wears through a pair every nine months and doesn't want to drop $280 on his next set. We see both move every week.
Red Wing and Irish Setter belong to the welders, the linemen, and the foremen who want a boot they can resole. The Red Wing 2406 and the Irish Setter Ramsey are heritage builds — Goodyear welt, full-grain leather, made to be conditioned and rebuilt instead of thrown out. They cost more up front. They cost less per year if you take care of them.
Thorogood is the American-built mid-tier. The Gen-Flex2 and the Infinity FD are popular with electricians and pipefitters because the soft-toe versions are legal on most NYC commercial sites and the steel-toe versions hit ASTM without weighing five pounds. Thorogood's also the brand we recommend when somebody comes in saying their last pair killed their feet — the polyurethane midsole is forgiving on concrete.
Rockrooster and CAT cover the value end. Rockrooster is what we hand a homeowner doing a kitchen reno who needs steel toes for one job and doesn't want to spend Carhartt money. CAT Second Shift is the guy whose boss said "steel toes by Monday" and he's got eighty bucks. Both are real ASTM-rated boots, not knockoffs.

Wolverine is the wildcard. The Floorhand and the Overpass are quiet favorites — waterproof, decent ankle support, priced between Thorogood and Timberland Pro. Crews that have tried everything end up here.
Now, the toe debate. Steel, composite, alloy — they all hit ASTM F2413 if the boot is rated. Steel is heaviest, cheapest, and conducts cold and electricity. Composite is lighter, doesn't trip the metal detector at airport jobsites or federal buildings, and won't conduct heat or cold. Alloy is the middle — lighter than steel, denser than composite, holds its shape better over years. If you're on a high-rise and walking through metal detectors twice a day, get composite. If you're doing demo and dropping concrete chunks, steel is fine and cheaper. If you want one boot that does everything for a long time, alloy.
Sizing is where most online buyers get burned. We have a Brannock device on the floor — the metal sizing tool — and we use it. Your sneaker size is not your work-boot size, especially in safety toes. The toe box is shaped differently. A guy who's a 10.5 in a Nike is often a 10 in a Timberland Pro and a 10 wide in a Red Wing. Try them on with the socks you actually wear. Walk around the store. On widths: Red Wing and Thorogood run wide. Timberland Pro runs medium-to-narrow. Rockrooster runs European, which means narrower than American medium. CAT is forgiving.
