Pit Boss runs roomy. Boondock is true to size. The TiTAN line is newer. Here's what that actually means on your feet.

Timberland Pro is the safety-toe brand most foremen ask for first. Not Timberland the yellow nubuck boot you wore in high school — Timberland Pro, the work line, with composite or steel toes, EH-rated soles, slip-resistant outsoles, the whole jobsite spec sheet. They're a separate cut of the brand and they get it right more often than not.

We carry three families on the floor most of the time: Pit Boss, Boondock, and the TiTAN line.

Pit Boss

Pit Boss is the workhorse — the 6-inch and 8-inch steel-toe in wheat or black, the boot that's been around forever and that every concrete guy and demo crew owns. It's not fancy. It's a sturdy leather upper, a steel toe, a Goodyear-welt-style construction. It takes a beating. The price is right. It's what you buy when you don't want to overthink it.

Fit note: Pit Boss runs roomy. Go a half-size down. We've sent a lot of customers out the door in a size 10 Pit Boss who wear an 11 in a sneaker. If you order online and don't know this, you'll get a boot that feels like a canoe. Come in, try them, we'll save you the return.

Boondock

Boondock is the next step up — composite toe, more aggressive lugged outsole, anti-fatigue insole, a stiffer shank under the arch. It's heavier and more boot than the Pit Boss, but it's the one guys who walk all day on uneven surfaces (electricians on roof jobs, framers on subfloors) reach for. The composite toe is lighter than steel and won't conduct cold or heat as bad in extreme weather.

Fit note: Boondock is true to size. Order your normal size. The fit is closer than Pit Boss — there's a real footbed and the heel cups are tighter, so a roomy size will slop around.

TiTAN

"Pit Boss runs roomy — go a half-size down. Boondock is true to size. Come in and we'll sort it."

TiTAN is Timberland Pro's lighter, more athletic line. Think work-shoe more than work-boot — alloy or composite safety-toe, more flexible upper, lighter weight. Plumbers, electricians, HVAC guys who are in and out of trucks all day and don't want a 4-pound boot on each foot. It's not for demo work. It's for trades where you walk more than you stand.

Fit note: TiTAN is true to size, sometimes a touch snug in the toe box. If you have a wide foot, ask — they make wide widths in some models.

Other models we move

Direct Attach 6-inch is a steel-toe insulated boot that's a winter classic. Hyperion 6-inch alloy-toe is a lighter alternative for guys who like the Boondock fit but want it a half-pound lighter. Powertrain Sport is closer to a sneaker — fine for warehouse, not for demo.

Where it falls short

Couple of things. The price has crept up. A pair of Boondocks now is meaningfully more than they were five years ago. You're paying for the brand recognition and the spec, but if you only need a basic safety toe, Rockrooster will give you 80% of the boot for 60% of the price (we carry that too — different post). If you need the Boondock specifically because your job calls for the EH rating and the puncture-resistant plate, pay for it.

The other thing — the leather quality on some of the cheaper Pit Boss runs is not what it was. The wheat nubuck on a 2018 Pit Boss broke in differently than the 2024 version. Not bad, just different. We've heard this from customers more than once.

Insoles wear out before the boots do. If your Boondocks feel dead at month nine, swap the insole — you've got another year in them.

Bottom line

Pit Boss if you want the cheap, true workhorse — and size down a half. Boondock if you want a real, modern, durable composite-toe — order true to size. TiTAN if you walk all day and don't need a tank. Come in, try a pair, walk around the shop. We'll get the fit right.
