Brownstone gardens, parkway maintenance, and a lot of curb-cutting. Here's the kit for a Staten Island lawn crew.

An NYC landscaper isn't a Long Island landscaper. The properties are smaller, the access is rougher, the curbs are higher, and a third of the day is spent moving equipment in and out of a truck on a one-way street while a horn blows. The gear list reflects that.

Boots first. You're walking on uneven ground, kneeling on mulch, climbing in and out of a truck bed, and standing on a Toro mower deck. A 6-inch waterproof leather work boot is the right answer. Timberland Pro Pit Boss waterproof, Carhartt CMF6366 6-inch comp toe, or the Wolverine Overpass 6-inch CarbonMax. Comp toe is mandatory because you're around line trimmers, edgers, and shovels — a stub-toe injury is the most common landscaper injury.

Don't wear sneakers, not even for a quick lawn cut. Yes, your buddy does it. He's also going to step on a rake.

Pants: Carhartt Rugged Flex Rigby Five-Pocket pants for warm weather, Washed Duck Dungaree B11 for cool weather. Reinforced knees if you do garden bed work. Avoid shorts even in summer — line-trimmer debris hits your shins at 60 mph. We've seen embedded pebbles in landscaper calves. Wear pants.

Shirts: hi-vis Class 2 short-sleeve in summer, hi-vis long-sleeve in fall. NYC parkway work usually requires Class 2 because of vehicle proximity. The Ergodyne GloWear 8425 mesh tee, the Pyramex RTS3110, or the Carhartt 100495 Force Color Enhanced long-sleeve are all good. Two of each because you're going to sweat through them by lunch.

Hat: a vented cap or a wide-brim sun hat. Some landscapers wear a hard hat for tree work — the Petzl Vertex Vent if you're doing actual tree climbing, the MSA V-Gard for general crew work. Most lawn crew guys are in a Carhartt cap.

Eye protection: ANSI Z87 wraparound, foam-gasket if you're using a leaf blower or string trimmer. The Pyramex V3G with foam gasket is a popular landscaper choice. The 3M SecureFit 400 with the foam seal is the upgrade.

Hearing pro: NRR 25+ if you're running a mower or trimmer for any length of time. The 3M Peltor X4A muffs are quiet enough for an 8-hour day. Foam plugs work too but get lost. Bluetooth earmuffs are a guilty pleasure that get a lot of crews through the day — the ISOtunes Free 2.0 are the popular choice.

Gloves: depends on the task. For pruning: a leather palm with a long cuff, like the Wells Lamont 1218 or the Carhartt A553. The long cuff matters — rose canes, holly, and pyracantha will tear up your forearms. For mulch and bed work: a nitrile-coated like the Atlas 370. For line trimmer and edger: a snug-fit nitrile with vibration dampening, like the Mechanix Vent.

Pruning shears, loppers, and a pruning saw are not workwear but a landscaper carries them like a carpenter carries a hammer. Felco 2 hand pruners is the standard. Corona BP3180 loppers. Silky Gomboy folding pruning saw.

Sun protection: long-sleeve UPF 50 shirt (Carhartt Force Sun Defender), neck shade under the cap, sunscreen at lunch. Skin cancer is real for outdoor trades. We sell the SPF 50 Banana Boat Sport at the counter.

Cooling towel and bandana for summer. Ergodyne Chill-Its 6602 cooling towel — wet it, wring it, drape it. Buys you 20 degrees of perceived cool.

Backpack blower harness: most guys end up with shoulder issues by 50. A real harness with chest strap and proper fit reduces strain. Husqvarna and Stihl both make padded harnesses for their blowers. Take the time to adjust them — most crews don't.

NYC landscaping is a punishing year-round trade. The kit isn't much different from any other outdoor trade — the difference is you're closer to traffic, closer to property lines, and you carry more cuts and stings home than most people.
